What challenges/problems have you overcome that you could attribute to knowledge gained from the CCIFP designation?
Obtaining my CCIFP taught me about succession planning and what modifying a construction company’s organizational structure would look like.
Can you share a particular situation?
The HR portion of the exam elevated my recognition of the important role HR plays in a company and taking care of our most important assets — our people! This insight led me to advocate for hiring a dedicated HR manager, a decision that has significantly strengthened our workforce and overall operations.
What was the most obvious advantage you felt?
The most obvious advantage I felt was the confidence I’ve gained in myself. It enabled me to advance from an accounting assistant to the VP of Finance, all without a college degree or CPA. Instead, I had the help of mentors, education through CFMA, and the CCIFP Study Guide.
Can you share any metrics/KPIs?
Cash flow is the number one KPI. Our accounts receivable (A/R) is less than 5% over 90 days (excluding retainage).
Why is it important to have a CCIFP in your organization?
Having a CCIFP in our organization shows our board of directors, outside business partners, and others in the industry that we have team members with extensive construction-specific accounting knowledge and that we are committed to continuing education, which is a requirement to keep the CCIFP designation after it is achieved.
Why would you recommend the CCIFP to another person or company?
Construction accounting has distinct risks and complexities. This certification acknowledges the proficiencies learned and gained through on-the-job training as well as external education and mentorship. It also demonstrates your dedication to continued learning.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about becoming a CCIFP?
It’s an honor to join the ranks of CCIFPs and to be recognized as a member of an outstanding group of individuals that have committed to the industry through this certification. It’s great to have this valuable certification available for those who are not public accountants.
